Trailers with alloy wheels, with centre caps, are more susceptible to rusting of wheel hubs and bearing failure. Centre caps contribute to wear as they can retain salt water after leaving the boat ramp. Often overlooked when cleaning the boat after a day out, the center cap retains salt water and is next to impossible to flush out completely without removing the cap. Over the span of a few days, the water dries out, leaving salt behind. Hidden behind the cap and not flushed regularly, salt will continue to build up and eventually rust the wheel hub, bearing cover and in some cases, leak into the bearings and shortening its lifespan (as shown in a photo below).
We recommend removing the centre caps permanently and flush it well with fresh water after every use. Keep in mind that even with the cap removed, there is a lip on the wheel for the cap to clip onto which is how salt water remains trapped.
